Authorities have closed the Hamrin Bridge in Diyala province to traffic as a precautionary security measure following structural erosion in the bridge's approach zones. The closure follows a formal request from the Diyala Directorate of Roads and Bridges to senior officials to address safety concerns.
The Ministry of Construction and Housing confirmed that the bridge's main structure and concrete supports remain fully intact. Officials identified the issue as being strictly limited to the earthen approach zones.
Rising water levels in Lake Hamrin caused the erosion, as the side slopes of the approach zones lacked necessary protective surfacing. This environmental factor compromised the stability of the road leading to the bridge.
Ministry spokesperson Nabil al-Saffar noted that the overall project is 89 percent complete. He clarified that the bridge’s previous opening was intended only as a temporary measure.
