Death sentence handed down in killing of Baghdad jeweler

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Rusafa Criminal Court in Baghdad sentenced a defendant to death for kidnapping and killing a jeweler, the victim’s family said. The family said the defendant was the second member of a three-person gang involved in the case. The family also said a death sentence had previously been issued against the first person arrested in the case, who was detained months after the incident. The file remains open while authorities await the arrest of the third suspect. The case began in May 2018, when a jeweler was kidnapped in Baghdad’s New Baghdad district. All the items in the shop were stolen, and he was later killed and left on the side of a road. The jeweler’s body was found days after he was abducted.
