Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on US goods

OTTAWA, Canada — The Canadian government said Wednesday it will impose retaliatory customs duties ranging from 15% to 50% on a set of US imports, following the failure of talks aimed at avoiding the 50% tariff the United States had set on certain Canadian goods. The Canadian countermeasure is scheduled to take effect on September 8, 2026. The move comes after Ottawa earlier pledged to respond after Washington imposed 50% duties on selected Canadian products. US President Donald Trump said duties on Canadian automobiles would rise to 50% from January 1, while existing levies on steel imports would remain at the current level. Washington currently applies a 25% tariff on Canadian vehicles and 50% on Canadian steel. The reciprocal steps have reignited trade tensions between North America's two largest trading partners.
