Belgium rallies past Senegal 3-2 in extra time to reach World Cup Round of 16

SEATTLE — Belgium advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time in their Round of 32 match. Senegal took a 2-0 lead through Habib Diara in the 25th minute and Ismaïla Sarr in the 51st. Belgium cut the deficit in the 86th minute when Romelu Lukaku finished off an assist from Thomas Meunier, then equalized three minutes later as Youri Tielemans headed in a Leandro Trossard cross to force extra time. In the 120th minute, a Video Assistant Review awarded Belgium a penalty, which Tielemans converted to complete the comeback. Belgium will face the winner of the United States–Bosnia and Herzegovina match in the Round of 16.
