Baghdad Municipality Launches Campaign to Plant 300,000 Trees

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Baghdad's municipality announced a campaign to plant 300,000 perennial, heat-resistant trees across the city, with work carried out under the direct instruction of Mayor Ammar Musa Kazim. The initiative, launched June 9, has been ongoing since March 12 and aims to combat summer heat, expand green spaces and improve the city's environmental appearance. Municipal workers are joined by youth volunteers, civil society organizations, students and city residents. Public institutions and private sector companies are also supporting the effort. Municipality spokesman Uday al-Jendil said Baghdad collects between 9,000 and 10,000 tons of solid waste daily, with additional heavy equipment from the private sector deployed in high-density areas.
