Arab League chief condemns Iranian attacks on Kurdistan Region, Gulf states

TEHRAN, Iran — CAIRO — Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned Iranian attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Gulf countries, describing them as "so reckless and grave as to warrant condemnation." In a written statement, Fahmy said Iran's strikes against Gulf states aimed to "expand the arena of conflict and drag the region into instability" and added that "this unjust Iranian aggression is rejected in its entirety." Fahmy said attacks aimed at Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Kuwait, as well as strikes on infrastructure and vital facilities, showed that Tehran was pursuing "an aggressive posture based on miscalculations." He described the operations as a "clear violation" of Arab states' sovereignty, international law and the principles of good neighborliness, and added that any attack on an Arab state constitutes an attack on Arab national security as a whole. The secretary-general called on Iran to "de-escalate, halt the attacks immediately and return to the path of negotiations." Iranian strikes in recent days have hit weapons and ammunition depots in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil, in operations the Iranian government says are aimed at Kurdish opposition groups based in the region. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said earlier that Iranian strikes on the country's oil facilities caused injuries among personnel and material damage at the targeted sites. No further details were immediately available on Iran's response to the Arab League's statement.
