A research station on the northern tip of Antarctica recorded a temperature of 15.4°C on June 6, the highest June reading ever measured on the continent, Argentine meteorologists said. The reading was taken at the Esperanza station, operated by Argentina, and surpassed the previous June record of 13.3°C set in 1998. It is well above the station's June average of minus 6.2°C.
José Luis Stella, a climate expert at Argentina's National Meteorological Service, told AFP the figure was extremely unusual for this time of year. He said the reading reflects a broader warming pattern rather than a single anomaly.
Record temperatures were also reported in the same period at Argentina's Marambio and San Martín bases. Raul Cordero, a professor at the University of Groningen, said the warm air mass affecting northern Antarctica is part of an ongoing temperature trend in the region, not an isolated event.
