The American Heart Association said growing scientific evidence has strengthened the link between e-cigarette use and cardiovascular disease. The association reported that the products, often marketed as harmless, contain toxic substances such as formaldehyde and heavy metals that can cause cellular damage, weaken blood vessel function and contribute to arterial plaque buildup. A study published in the journal Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology found that synthetic coolants used in some e-cigarettes may disrupt heart rhythm, raising the risk of arrhythmia and cardiac arrest. Dr. Jason G. Rose of the University of Maryland School of Medicine said e-cigarettes and newer nicotine products carry health hazards distinct from, but not necessarily less severe than, those of traditional cigarettes. Experts noted that nicotine raises blood pressure, narrows blood vessels and increases clotting tendency, heightening the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. The association also pointed out that some e-cigarettes contain nicotine levels equivalent to or higher than a pack of conventional cigarettes, increasing addiction risk among young users. The American Heart Association renewed its call for a ban on all flavored tobacco and nicotine products, stronger prevention programs and expanded access to scientifically approved cessation methods.
