World Cup opens in Los Angeles with Hollywood-style ceremony

PARIS, France — The World Cup kicked off in Los Angeles on Friday with a Hollywood-style opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium, which was temporarily rebranded as Los Angeles Stadium for the event. Giant screens displayed the city's famous Hollywood sign while loudspeakers played a "Welcome to the USA" announcement to spectators. A marching band opened the show, followed by performances from artists including Future, Tyla, Anitta and K-pop star Lisa. Costumes and stage designs incorporated references to Los Angeles street art and the city's creative industries. Tom Cruise, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe, Owen Wilson and Paris Hilton were among the celebrities in the stands. Before the United States' opening match against Paraguay, President Donald Trump spoke with the team by telephone to wish them well. Jason Sudeikis and Katy Perry were also set to perform shortly before kickoff. The tournament marks the United States' third time hosting the World Cup.
