Water hyacinth buildup in the Saudi River in Mishhab district, Najaf, is threatening agricultural activity and the irrigation supply for more than 15,000 dunams of farmland. Farmers say the plant has spread rapidly in recent years, clogging waterways and putting the growing season at risk.
The Dibeyniye River is one of the district’s most important tributaries and provides water to the area’s farms. Local residents say the accumulation has worsened to the point that it is obstructing water flow and undermining agricultural work.
Farmers say the problem is especially severe as they face a wider water crisis and rising costs. They warn that the combined pressure is now endangering their livelihoods.
Residents are calling on Najaf lawmakers in the Iraqi Parliament and the Agriculture Ministry to clear the waterways and eliminate the plant. They are urging urgent action to prevent further damage to farming in the district.
