WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — The U.S. Treasury Department announced Wednesday new sanctions targeting entities in Iran and Russia in an effort to counter weapons proliferation and terrorism financing. The action came a day after President Donald Trump said his administration was working to include Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah under a U.S. sanctions law aimed at Russia.
On Tuesday, Treasury had issued a separate sanctions package covering a number of Iranian-linked individuals, entities and vessels. Alongside that announcement, the department unveiled a general license effective July 14 permitting the wind-down of certain activities involving sanctioned persons and vessels, along with specific safety and environmental transactions and the discharge of cargo involving sanctioned parties.
The new measures are intended to reinforce Washington's financial pressure campaign against Iran and Russia and reflect the administration's effort to bring Iran and its Middle Eastern allies within the framework of sanctions imposed on Russia. No further details were immediately available on the entities designated in Wednesday's action.
