BAQUBAH, Iraq โ Two separate incidents were reported in Iraq's Diyala province on Wednesday. A 17-year-old drowned while swimming in Lake Hamrin, according to a local security source. Medical teams responded, but the teenager could not be revived. The body was transferred to the forensic medicine department to complete legal procedures.
In a separate incident the same day, a niece of a member of parliament was wounded at an entry checkpoint in the Karataba district of northeastern Diyala. The driver of the vehicle passed through the checkpoint at high speed and did not comply with orders to stop and submit to a search, the source said. Security personnel opened fire on the vehicle, and one of the bullets struck the young woman's hand. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The source said the matter was resolved through a tribal reconciliation between the involved parties before it could escalate. No further details were immediately available.
