MASHHAD, Iran โ Two members of Iran's Basij paramilitary force were killed in an armed attack during the funeral and burial ceremonies of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the northeastern city of Mashhad, local sources said.
Amir Shamghadri, deputy security chief of Khorasan Razavi Province, confirmed that two people died in the attack on Serafrazan Street in western Mashhad. He said the motive and the identities of the victims had not yet been established and that an investigation was underway.
According to the official, one Basij member died at the scene and the other at a hospital. The attackers used light firearms, and their identities remain unknown. Security forces were continuing search operations to locate them.
Serafrazan Street is located about 17 kilometers from the Imam Reza Shrine. Khamenei's body was transported to Mashhad on a civilian aircraft escorted by a fighter jet, drawing tens of thousands of mourners to the final stop of a six-day funeral procession that began in Tehran and passed through Qom, Najaf and Karbala.
