WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed a Supreme Court ruling that lifted restrictions on the president's authority to remove heads of independent federal agencies. The court, in a majority decision issued Friday, struck down longstanding limits dating back roughly 91 years that had constrained presidents from firing officials leading independent federal bodies.
The ruling followed Trump's dismissal of Federal Trade Commission member Rebecca Slaughter. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump described the decision as one of the most significant on presidential authority, saying it strengthened the powers of the U.S. presidency.
The court's decision reversed precedents that had restricted presidential removal power over officials at independent agencies such as the FTC, clearing the way for greater direct control by the executive branch.
