WASHINGTON, United States — WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the United States has spent $999 billion on NATO since 2014, publishing a breakdown of member-state defense outlays that puts Washington far ahead of its allies. Britain followed with $90.5 billion, France with $66.5 billion, Italy with $48.8 billion and Poland with $44.3 billion, according to the figures Trump released.
Trump wrote that Germany and other members remained well below those levels, arguing that the imbalance in burden-sharing among allies has persisted throughout the 2014-2025 period. The post did not detail the methodology used for the figures.
U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said the Trump administration plans a new strategy that would "reward" governments raising defense spending and "punish" those allocating fewer resources, as Washington seeks to press transatlantic partners ahead of a summit in Ankara that Trump is expected to attend. Whitaker warned that some European countries have not shown enough effort to meet their defense spending commitments.
At last year's NATO summit in The Hague, leaders adopted a target of allocating 5 percent of gross domestic product to defense by 2035, a goal Trump had pushed for. The upcoming Turkish summit is set to take place against the backdrop of tensions across the Atlantic over European allies' response to Trump's approach to Iran.
