Talabani Says Regional Tensions Harm Iraq, Sees US-Iran Accord as Beneficial

SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq — Bafil Talabani, leader of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union, said Saturday that ongoing regional tensions are damaging both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Talabani said any peace or agreement reached between the United States and Iran would benefit Sulaymaniyah and the wider region. He emphasized that Sulaymaniyah would be directly affected by developments on the US-Iran axis. The statement comes amid continued political debates in the region. Talabani also said his party does not want a government structure similar to the current administration in the Kurdistan Region, without elaborating on what alternatives he would prefer. He called for resolution of regional tensions, arguing that reducing pressure on Iraq would serve the interests of both Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region.
