BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Residents of Baghdad reported a strong sulfur-like odor across multiple neighborhoods on Friday and Saturday nights, about three weeks after a similar episode lingered in the capital for two days. The group Iraq Green had warned at the time that the smell could recur. The observatory said the odor may be linked to emissions from oil and industrial facilities around Baghdad, unlicensed workshops and uncontrolled waste burning. It also noted that weather conditions could allow pollutants to accumulate in lower atmospheric layers. In recent weeks, footage from the agencyโ€™s cameras captured smoke rising from the Dora refinery in southern Baghdad and spreading to surrounding neighborhoods. No official statement on the latest episode had been issued as of publication. Investigations into the source of the smell are continuing, and no further details were immediately available.
