Sudan's Energy and Petroleum Minister Mu'tasim Ibrahim Ali Gadallah said 60% of the country's electricity infrastructure has been destroyed and that all petroleum product needs are now being met through imports.
Speaking in the capital Khartoum, the minister said the Jilay refinery has been rendered fully inoperable by successive attacks. He added that the targeting of the electricity sector has caused $14 billion in infrastructure losses, and that the Merowe Dam has also been hit by drone strikes.
Fighting in Sudan began in April 2023 following a dispute between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces over military integration. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced roughly 13 million, according to international tallies. Infrastructure across several sectors, including Khartoum's largest oil refinery, has been partially or fully destroyed.
