Sirens sound in Jordan's Aqaba as missiles intercepted; Israel says no impact on its territory

AMMAN, Jordan — Sirens sounded in the southern Jordanian city of Aqaba on Wednesday amid explosions heard over the city, which Jordanian media attributed to missile interceptions. The Israeli military said Iranian missiles had been detected heading toward Aqaba but did not affect Israeli territory, and that Israeli air defenses did not intervene. The Israeli statement said no sirens were activated inside Israel and that the missiles did not land on or drop shrapnel on Israeli soil. It gave no further details on the outcome of the launches in Jordanian airspace. The incident followed a statement from the Jordanian Armed Forces a day earlier saying the military had responded to drone attacks, neutralized the threat and recorded no casualties or material damage. Iran has reported multiple attacks in recent days targeting U.S. bases in Gulf states as well as energy facilities there, saying the operations were in retaliation for U.S. strikes on Iranian territory.
