SALADIN, Iraq โ The Iraq Rugby Federation has been granted full membership by both Asia Rugby and World Rugby, the international bodies announced. The federation had previously operated as an associate member of both organizations.
Asia Rugby and World Rugby said the decision reflected their satisfaction with efforts made in Iraq to develop the sport and expand its reach. Iraqi Rugby Federation President Hizzaz welcomed the upgrade, attributing it to joint work carried out since 2017.
Hizzaz thanked World Rugby President Brett Robinson, Asia Rugby President Qais Al-Zalayleh and Iraqi National Olympic Committee President Akil Muften for their support of the federation. He said work would continue to raise Iraq's profile internationally despite a lack of financial backing.
Plans announced by the federation include establishing regular leagues for men and women across all age categories and skill levels, as well as hosting international coaching and referee courses.
