MEXICO CITY โ The 2026 World Cup opening ceremony kicked off at a stadium in Mexico City with music and cultural performances featuring Colombian singer Shakira and Mexican actor and producer Salma Hayek. Hayek, who serves as a 2026 World Cup global ambassador, addressed the crowd before the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, welcoming the tournament alongside host nations Canada and the United States and noting that 48 countries will take part.
Hayek, who was born in the state of Veracruz, said in her remarks that the Mexican people take great pride in hosting the opening match and described football as a common language that brings different cultures together. She wore a red Gucci blazer, wide-leg trousers and a floral shirt at the ceremony.
After the speech, Hayek joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the protocol section of the stands and remained in view of the cameras throughout the event. Shakira also contributed musical performances to the ceremony. The 59-year-old Hayek's appearance formed part of the opening festivities ahead of the tournament, which will be staged across Mexico, the United States and Canada.
