BAGHDAD, Iraq โ The Saladin Provincial Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to name a street in Tikrit "Asudu'r-Rafideyn," according to the council's press office. The decision was taken during the 14th session chaired by council head Adil al-Sumayda'i.
The naming follows a written directive issued by Iraq's Council of Ministers, which ordered the designation to be applied to main streets and boulevards in Baghdad and all other provinces. The previous cabinet, led by former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, approved implementation of the directive on April 4.
Officials tied the naming to Iraq's national football team qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a return to the tournament finals after a 40-year absence. No further details on the specific street or a renaming ceremony were immediately available.
