DOHA, Qatar โ Qatar's government announced the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the father of current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The announcement was carried in an official condolence message released by Qatari authorities, which did not specify the cause of death.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 before handing power to his son, Sheikh Tamim, in a transfer described at the time as a step toward a new era of leadership. He had since lived out of public office, with his profile largely limited to occasional appearances.
Following the announcement, flags were lowered to half-mast across the country and mourning was declared at official institutions. The Qatari government said official mourning protocols would be applied and that condolence messages had been received.
News of his death drew responses from across the Gulf, with regional governments issuing their own messages of condolence. The Qatari authorities said funeral and memorial arrangements would be announced in the coming hours.
