Portugal assistant coach Ricardo Carvalho has temporarily left the national team's training camp following the death of his father, Manuel Ribeiro, ahead of the team's 2026 World Cup match against Croatia. The match is scheduled for 2 July at BMO Field in Toronto.
Carvalho, a 48-year-old former Real Madrid and Chelsea defender, departed the Portugal squad to attend his father's funeral, according to The Sun. Manuel Ribeiro died at the age of 69. Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of the coaching staff offered their condolences to Carvalho, the report said.
Under head coach Roberto Martรญnez, the Portugal squad held a minute of silence in memory of Manuel Ribeiro as preparations for the Croatia match continued. No further details about funeral arrangements were immediately available.
