One Dead, Two Wounded in Nasiriyah Armed Attack

DHI QAR, Iraq — An armed attack in Nasiriyah killed one person and wounded two others Sunday night into Monday, according to security sources in Dhi Qar province. The assault targeted a pickup carrying people from Basra who had come to follow up on relatives injured in a previous traffic accident in the Batha area of Dhi Qar. Security forces were deployed to the area after the attack and closed the entrances and exits to Dhi Qar while searching for the perpetrators. The incident followed a severe traffic collision on the international road between Dhi Qar and Basra, where a bus caught fire after colliding with a truck. Twenty-one people were killed and 19 others were wounded in that accident. Dhi Qar Traffic Director Brigadier General Ziyad al-Hassuna said the collision occurred because the bus driver fell asleep.
