Norway striker Alexander Sørloth received death threats and abusive messages on social media following his national team's elimination from the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals by England, his girlfriend Lena Selnes said.
Selnes, posting from Miami after the match, shared examples of the messages on her Instagram account. One comment included a direct death threat, while others read "please kill yourself, idiot" and "leave Norway, jump off a cliff," according to the screenshots she shared.
The abuse, Selnes said, came after Sörloth, who plays for Atletico Madrid, chose to shoot instead of passing to teammate Erling Haaland in an empty position while Norway led 1-0. Norway was later eliminated from the tournament.
In her post, Selnes said the threats cannot be ignored and that football brings not only joy but also a wave of intense hatred. No further details on any police report or investigation were immediately available.
