EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey โ Brazilian forward Neymar Junior has announced his retirement from the national team following Brazil's exit from the 2026 World Cup. The decision comes after Brazil was defeated 2-1 by Norway in the round of 16 at MetLife Stadium.
Erling Haaland scored both goals for Norway, while Neymar scored Brazil's lone goal via a penalty in stoppage time. Earlier in the match, Norway goalkeeper รrjan Nyland saved a 14th-minute penalty attempt by Bruno Guimarรฃes.
With the victory, Norway advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in the country's history.
Neymar, who retires as Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer, stated after the match that he did not give up without trying and noted that his international career ended at the same stadium where it began.
