NEW YORK, USA โ Mayor Zohran Mamdani has criticized the decision to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to the city ahead of the World Cup. Mamdani stated that the move, directed by Border Security Chief Tom Homan, is an attempt to spread fear and discord within the community.
In a statement posted on X, Mamdani asserted that the city would not allow ICE or any other agency to intimidate residents. He emphasized that New Yorkers would stand with their immigrant neighbors as the city prepares to welcome international guests for the tournament.
Border Security Chief Tom Homan intends to increase the number of immigration officers in New York to unprecedented levels in the near future.
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across 11 U.S. cities, including New York, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
