Stanford University researchers have developed a new drug that significantly lowers the risk of recurrence in patients with IgG4-related disease, a rare immune condition. The medication, called obexelimab, was tested in an international clinical trial involving 194 patients at 114 centers across 19 countries. All participants first achieved remission through steroid treatment before being divided into two groups. Those receiving obexelimab had a recurrence rate of 26.8 percent, compared with 54.6 percent for the placebo group, representing roughly a 50 percent reduction in risk. Patients taking the drug also showed a higher likelihood of reaching full remission after one year. Dr. Matthew Baker, a co-author of the study from Stanford University, said current treatment options for the condition are limited and that obexelimab could offer a safer alternative. The drug was developed by Zenas BioPharma. No further details on regulatory approval or availability were immediately available.
