Najaf court sentences man to death over cow dispute shooting

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A criminal court in Najaf has sentenced a man to death by hanging for killing one person and wounding three others in an armed dispute over cows eating fallen dates from his land, a security source said. The shooting occurred in the Kadesiya subdistrict of Najaf province. The defendant was convicted under Article 406 of Iraq's amended Penal Code No. 111 of 1969 in connection with the case file stemming from the armed clash in Kadesiya. Three people wounded in the incident remain under treatment at local hospitals, while the body of the deceased has been handed over to his family, according to the security source. The source added that the verdict remains subject to the appeals process to be reviewed by the relevant judicial authorities.
