Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France beat Senegal 3-1 in their Group I match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, overtaking Olivier Giroud as the all-time leading scorer for the French national team. Mbappé opened the scoring in the 66th minute from a Michael Olise pass before Bradley Barcola doubled the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal, and Mbappé sealed the victory with a goal in stoppage time. The two strikes took his tally to 58 goals in 99 international appearances, one clear of Giroud's previous mark of 57. Speaking after the match, the Real Madrid forward said he was happy to have written his name into French football history. Mbappé, who had entered the game one goal shy of Giroud's record, is now among the players closest to the all-time World Cup scoring record ahead of the 2026 tournament.
