BERLIN โ Germany's geosciences research center reported that a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off Japan's eastern coast on Saturday, with the tremor recorded at a depth of 78 kilometers. No casualties or material damage have been reported so far, and authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation.
Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active zones in the world. The country is known for its advanced infrastructure and early-warning systems designed to mitigate the impact of earthquakes.
The region has experienced recent seismic activity. On July 28, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Kumamoto on Kyushu Island, injuring dozens of people. Japan has a long history of destructive earthquakes due to its position along multiple tectonic plate boundaries.
