The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off Northern California early Wednesday. The tremor was recorded at about 8:10 a.m. Pacific time near Redwood Valley and off the coast of Mendocino County, according to USGS data. Residents in the area reported feeling the shaking. The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom said the governor had been briefed on reports of the earthquake and that the Governor's Office of Emergency Services was coordinating closely with local authorities to assess potential impacts and damage. USGS recorded at least 15 aftershocks in the region following the initial quake. Officials said damage assessment work was continuing and that developments were being monitored.
