WASIT, Iraq โ A lawyer in Wasit has filed a criminal complaint against Badr Organization Secretary-General Hadi al-Amiri over his statements concerning the 2019 Tishreen protests, the lawyer said. Attorney Hazim Mazin al-Bedri submitted the petition to the competent judicial authorities in Wasit, requesting an investigation into Amiri's remarks describing his role during that period as "resistance."
The petition calls for the authentication of a recording in circulation, the taking of Amiri's statement regarding his comments in the recording, and the initiation of legal proceedings if any violations are identified. The complaint was filed amid ongoing debate over responsibility for the Tishreen events, which triggered large-scale protests across multiple Iraqi cities and resulted in casualties.
The lawyer stressed that the filing of the complaint does not constitute an accusation or conviction against Amiri and that any final decision rests with the judicial authorities. Courts in Wasit are expected to determine how to handle the petition within the framework of legal procedure. No further details were immediately available on a timeline for the court's review.
