TEHRAN, Iran โ Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) said Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will be buried in Iraq following an official state funeral ceremony. Hashd al-Shaabi General Media Director Muhannad Al-Aqabi said at a coordination meeting that the ceremony would be held at the request of the Iraqi government and in coordination with political groups.
Al-Aqabi said official Iraqi institutions will take part in organizing and managing the ceremony. Iranian authorities had previously announced that Khamenei's body will be buried in Iraq on July 8 following ceremonies in Tehran.
Khamenei was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes targeting Tehran on February 28, ending a nearly three-decade tenure as Supreme Leader. He was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.
