KARBALA, Iraq โ The governor of Karbala and head of the provincial Higher Security Committee, Nasif Jasim al-Khattabi, held a meeting with the city's security commander, police director and the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) Euphrates Operations commander to coordinate preparations for the upcoming commemorations. The talks focused on the security plan for the Hijri month of Muharram, when millions of pilgrims travel to the city.
Participants agreed to strengthen intelligence work and advance security measures ahead of the peak commemorations, which culminate on the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura. The governor said security plans must be continuously updated in response to changing conditions on the ground.
Al-Khattabi also instructed that roads and streets should not be closed beyond the narrowest possible scope, so that the movement of visitors is not disrupted. Karbala is the site where Imam Hussein was killed in 680 AD, an event commemorated annually by millions of Iraqis and foreign pilgrims who travel to the city on foot and by various means of transport.
