Iraqi movement outlines five demands over Kuwait's Tawi field investment

BASRA, Iraq — The Free Abdullah Agreement Opposition People's Movement in Basra raised concerns at a press conference over Kuwait's moves toward the Tawi field, including an estimated $3.3 billion tender for a gas processing facility. The movement said the tender reflects a direction toward investment in the field and the consolidation of new field realities. The group also pointed to objections filed by Gulf states after coordinate lists and a maritime map were submitted to the United Nations. It stressed that the Iraqi government's position is grounded in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and relevant international legal rules, and called on the oil and foreign ministries to take urgent diplomatic and legal steps to protect Iraq's maritime rights. The five demands included high-level urgent diplomatic contacts, clarification of an official position paper, comprehensive handling of the maritime file, the formation of a national expert team covering relevant institutions, and documentation of Iraq's argument at the UN. The movement said maritime sovereignty safeguards the rights of future generations and called for a shift from reactive diplomacy to a proactive posture.
