BAGHDAD, Iraq โ A senior Iraqi military officer has been detained on accusations of espionage and corruption, according to security sources. Lt. Gen. Ahmed al-Tayyar was arrested during an operation in Baghdad, the sources said, adding that he served as the highest-ranking official responsible for security within a unit affiliated with the National Security Advisory.
Investigators are examining both a corruption case file and espionage allegations against al-Tayyar, the sources said. No official statement has been released detailing the specifics of the espionage accusations.
The arrest comes as investigations continue within Iraq's security bureaucracy. Officials from the National Security Advisory said no formal briefing on the matter had been provided as of Sunday.
Al-Tayyar's detention marks the latest development in an ongoing campaign targeting alleged corruption within the country's security institutions. Details of any evidence supporting the charges remain limited.
