BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” An Iraqi meteorologist has warned that plastic water bottles left in the sun pose a public health risk by releasing microplastic particles into the water. Sadiq Atiyya said the particles, most smaller than five millimeters and often visible only under a microscope, can disrupt hormonal balance once ingested. Atiyya said high temperatures break down the plastic structure and transfer the particles into the water. He listed other sources of microplastic contamination, including worn vehicle tires, washing polyester and nylon clothing, and cosmetics. The expert said microplastics may be a possible cause of ovarian cysts, hormonal irregularities and hair growth disorders, particularly among young women. He cautioned that long-term exposure could carry a cancer risk. Atiyya urged the public not to consume water stored in plastic bottles inside vehicles or other open areas. With temperatures across Iraq remaining high, he called for greater public awareness of the risks.
