BASRA, Iraq โ€” A member of Iraq's parliament, Abdulamir al-Mayahi, said 110,000 tons of sulfur are being stored in open air in Basra province, calling on authorities to determine who left the stockpile uncovered and where it is being sold and shipped. In a video statement posted on social media, al-Mayahi said the matter must be pursued until those responsible are held to account, adding that Basra residents' lives cannot be sacrificed to negligence and disorder. He said he would press the case and work to ensure that every official and individual involved is brought to justice. The lawmaker's remarks drew renewed attention to environmental and public health risks linked to the prolonged outdoor storage of sulfur in Basra. No further details on the stockpile's ownership or location were immediately available.
