BAGHDAD, Iraq โ Ali el-Abadi, head of the Iraqi Human Rights Center, called on the government Friday to lift scheduled electricity cuts in Basra province.
El-Abadi said complaints have increased in Hayaniye, North Basra, Huwayr az-Zubayr and Abu Shih, warning that protests could follow. He noted that extreme heat has severely worsened residents' health and living conditions.
Basra makes a significant contribution to the national economy and a substantial budget is allocated to the electricity sector, el-Abadi said. The center holds authorities responsible for the health, psychological and economic damage caused by the cuts.
The center called on the government to produce lasting solutions and ensure citizens' access to basic services.
