Iraqi anti-corruption body arrests Maysan municipality official for bribery

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity said on Monday that its investigators detained a municipal official in Maysan province after catching him accepting a bribe. The agency said the suspect, who heads the violations committee at the Amara Municipality Directorate, had demanded three million dinars from a citizen in exchange for an official document. According to the commission, the official had agreed to provide a written confirmation that no demolition order had been issued against an unauthorized construction. Investigators moved in under a judicial order and arrested him with the money in hand, the statement said. A case file has been opened and the suspect was referred to an investigating judge, who ordered his detention under Article 307 of Iraq's Penal Code. No further details were immediately available.
