Iraq to send only a discus thrower to the Asian Games

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq will field a single athlete, Mustafa Dager, in discus throw at the 20th Asian Games, scheduled for September 19 in the Japanese cities of Aichi and Nagoya, the Iraqi Athletics Federation announced. Federation Director General Zaydun Jawad said Dager had taken part in training camps in Germany during his preparation period, with technical and physical work aimed at reaching competitive level. Jawad said the athlete had recorded throws of more than 60 meters in training, a distance he described as a strong mark for the tournament. The federation said it assessed Dager as capable of achieving a positive result at the Asian Games. The multi-sport event is expected to draw athletes from across the Asian continent. Iraq will compete in athletics with a one-person delegation, according to the federation. No further details on additional participation in other sports were not provided in the announcement.
