Iraq summons Iran's ambassador over maps shared by Iranian diplomatic missions

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Foreign Ministry summoned Tehran's ambassador to Baghdad, Mohammed Kazem Ali Sadiq, following publications by some Iranian diplomatic missions containing maps related to the region, the ministry said in a written statement. The ministry said the ambassador was received by Assistant Secretary-General for Multilateral Relations and Legal Affairs Shurush Khalid Said, who sought clarification on the publications and accompanying statements. Iraq considers such material inconsistent with the close relations between the two countries and problematic under diplomatic norms, according to the statement. During the meeting, Said stressed the importance of continued consultation and coordination between Baghdad and Tehran on regional developments, particularly their implications for Iraq. He also said outstanding regional issues should be resolved through diplomatic channels and dialogue. The two officials discussed expanding reciprocal visits, strengthening coordination within international organizations and developing frameworks for cooperation in political, economic and security areas. Ambassador Sadiq affirmed Iran's readiness to continue cooperation with Iraq across multiple fields and pointed to the historical and social ties linking the two countries.
