BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Generators Union has decided to shut down all private generators across the country's cities on September 1, union head Dirğam al-Shuwayli said.
Al-Shuwayli said that relevant authorities have failed to comply with decisions issued by the Prime Minister, including the distribution of allocated fuel quotas under Cabinet resolutions. He noted that procedures for free fuel coupons have been completed, but the allocated fuel shares have not been delivered.
According to al-Shuwayli, units affiliated with the Oil Ministry have been demanding retroactive tax payments from generator owners for periods dating back to 2024. He said some state bodies have continued to enforce tax-related measures despite the Prime Minister's decision to cancel them.
The union official announced the nationwide shutdown decision in response to those developments, without elaborating on potential next steps if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.
