Iraq's Coordination Framework to meet to complete cabinet lineup

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraqi lawmaker Mohammed Abu al-Eis said the Coordination Framework bloc will convene in the coming days to work toward completing the cabinet, though he noted no specific timetable has been set and described ongoing assessments as expectations rather than firm plans. He said the process has been delayed by disputes over candidates for the Interior and Defense ministries. Sources within the Coordination Framework said talks among Shia leaders have focused on moderate candidates to fill the vacant ministerial seats, particularly the Interior and Defense portfolios. The disputes over nominees have been the main sticking point in efforts to finalize the government. Parliament granted a vote of confidence to the government of Prime Minister Ali Fail al-Zaidi and its ministerial program on May 14, 2026, voting on 14 of the 23 cabinet seats. Voting on nine ministries, including Interior, Defense, Higher Education and Planning, was postponed due to disagreements among political blocs over the proposed candidates.
