BAGHDAD, Iraq โ€” Iraq recorded 11,948 traffic accidents in 2025 outside the Kurdistan Region, a 1.6% increase from 11,763 in 2024, according to the Central Statistical Organization, citing the Interior Ministry's forensic statistics department. Of the total, 1,900 were fatal accidents and 10,048 were non-fatal. Baghdad reported the highest number with 2,333 cases, followed by Basra with 1,989 and Wasit with 1,176. The accidents killed 2,351 people in 2025, a 15.7% decline from the previous year. Men accounted for 81.5% of the fatalities and women 18.5%. Another 11,564 people were injured, a 2.8% drop from 2024. December was the worst month with 1,232 accidents, followed by November with 1,143 and October with 1,123. Most incidents occurred on main roads, which accounted for 50.7% of cases, while highways made up 25.8%, secondary roads 17.4% and rural roads 6.1%. Driver error was identified as the primary cause in 8,919 accidents, or 74.6% of the total.
