BAGHDAD, Iraq — NEW YORK — Iraq was elected one of the vice presidents of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly at a vote held during the assembly’s session in New York. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was chosen to serve as president of the session.
Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said the election was a new sign of confidence in Baghdad within the United Nations. It said Iraq would use the role to support the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to improving the General Assembly’s working mechanisms.
The ministry linked the outcome to the government’s balanced foreign policy and the work of Iraq’s delegation to the United Nations. It said the new post strengthens Iraq’s presence in international decision-making processes.
