Iraq border authority reports 440 violations, 128 arrests in August

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Iraq's Border Ports Authority recorded 440 violations and arrested 128 suspects during August, according to a monthly briefing from the agency. Authority spokesman Alaa al-Din al-Qaisi told the state news agency that the violations involved 183 customs cases and 50 joint activity records covering destruction and reissuance procedures. Qaisi said 128 people with arrest warrants issued by Iraqi courts were detained, while 56 others were deported for violating residency conditions. He added that two smuggling attempts involving currency were prevented. The agency also said 21 separate drug smuggling attempts were intercepted and the suspects involved were apprehended alongside the seized narcotics. Qaisi said the work was carried out under the leadership of Authority President Lt. Gen. Omar Adnan al-Waili, with the continued support of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi. Qaisi also noted the role of Brig. Gen. Saad Maan, head of the Security Media Cell, and the determination of Iraqi courts in following up on investigations. The Border Ports Authority said it would continue efforts to safeguard the country's security, economy and public health.
