BAGHDAD, Iraq โ The Iraq Media and Communications Authority ordered media outlets nationwide to immediately cease producing and broadcasting crime programs, citing concerns that such content had drifted from its original purpose toward sensationalism and defamation.
The authority said media organizations must obtain criminal and security information exclusively through official statements and channels of authorized security agencies. The decision follows findings that certain programs had deviated from national and legal responsibility standards, prompting regulatory intervention.
The authority stated it would encourage programs produced by security, judicial institutions and civil society organizations that focus on crime prevention efforts. Such productions should aim to increase legal awareness and strengthen public confidence in state institutions, according to the statement.
The directive requires all programs addressing crime to comply with professional standards outlined in media broadcasting regulations and to avoid harming the rights of defendants and victims.
